Austin Street Art and Capitol

We headed back into downtown Austin, hoping to visit some Austin landmarks and popular tourist spots, as well as drive around and look for more street art and murals after seeing a few last night. There are tons more murals all over Austin that we missed or didn’t know about, so we’ll definitely have to make a trip back and see the rest.

One in particular we wanted to see was the cheesy but iconic ‘i love you so much’ painted on the side of Jo’s Coffee on South Congress by the girlfriend of the owner. It has since become a popular spot for couples to take photos in front of. Since we just got married, we figured what better time to go there and take our own picture!

We continued driving through town, taking pictures of the sights as we went until we got to the Baylor Street Art Wall (aka the HOPE Outdoor Gallery), an abandoned development with huge concrete walls that provide an endless canvas for graffiti and street artists. Since the space is open and available to anyone, the artwork is constantly changing, so we didn’t know what we would see today. This can make it a bit of a hit-or-miss, but we did manage to find a few cool pieces this time.

Next, being in Austin, we of course had to see the Texas State Capitol building. We drove back in that direction, this time in a bit of a rush since it was getting closer to sunset. We parked on the street and walked around the grounds and looking at the statues and monuments. We got a lot of pictures in before our meter ran out just as it started to drizzle outside.

As we were heading out of the city, we made one last stop for a photo op in front of the ‘You’re My Butter Half’ mural at the United Way building on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Then we made our way down the street to have dinner at the Austin Daily Press, a sandwich shop that had some really original flavor combinations. I got The Edward, a torta with edamame fritters, avocado, and ginger peanut sauce. It’s really good and tastes like an Asian stir-fry in a sandwich. Kori got the Pineapple Express, a torta filled with chicken, ham, and pineapple ginger chutney. We also got an order of jalapeño hush puppies to split between us. Once we finish up, we’ll be getting on the road and heading back home.

The Afternoon

After finishing up our portraits with Zach, we hung around Lake Brownwood for a little while longer, taking a few more pictures by ourselves with Kori’s camera. Now we have come back to our suite where we are changing clothes before heading out to dinner. We took more photos of each other in our wedding attire on the deck and we’re picking a restaurant in town to have dinner at. Even though it’s a small town, there are a couple different nice restaurants to choose from, so we’re checking out their menus online before deciding.

We’re Married!

After getting ready at our hotel this morning, we drove to the bed and breakfast a few miles away with our photographer, Zach, following in his car behind us. There was a bit of a hiccup when we got lost, made a wrong turn, and had to turn around, all with Zach struggling to follow, but we eventually made it.

When we got there, we met the owners of the bed and breakfast, Don and Deb Morelock, with whom we had been communicating via phone and email in the weeks leading up to our trip. Deb had prepared a fresh bouquet for me, and she showed us over to the stone archway where we planned to have the ceremony. It’s beautiful day, and it was so nice to have our ceremony outside among all the trees and surrounded by nature. Don officiated the ceremony based on a script we had put together. He was a very good speaker and really made the meaning and emotion of the words come to life.  When it came time to exchange our vows, Kori and I were both very emotional and choking up as we read our vows aloud and declared our commitment to each other. After we had read our vows and exchanged our wedding rings, we were declared married!

After the ceremony, Deb showed us to where there was a mini bottle of champagne and pie ready for us. We had told her ahead of time that we preferred pie to cake, because it is Pi Day after all. We toasted and cut our wedding pie before calling our parents and siblings to tell them we were officially married. After some difficulties finding cell service, because we are so far away from everything, we were finally able to call our families. They already knew we would be getting married, but we wanted to make sure they were the first people we told once it was official.

Once we had done all of this, we spent a few hours walking around the Morelock’s property and Zach took some candid and posed pictures, so we’ll share some of those once we get them back from him in a week or so. [EDIT: Full wedding day gallery here!]

Choosing to Elope

We’ve been together for three years now, and we’ve known for nearly as long that we wanted to be together forever. Even though we wanted to get married, we felt that the production of big wedding wasn’t for us. We considered planning a wedding, but we wanted the ceremony to be personal, intimate, and true to ourselves and our relationship. Not to mention that after a long engagement while I was in college, we just wanted to be married already! An elopement was the obvious choice, so we decided to elope and have a reception later on to share the joy of our union with family and friends. It took a couple of months of planning to find the venue and book everything, eventually deciding on Star of Texas Bed & Breakfast in Brownwood, Texas to exchange our vows. We still have more plans and details to work out, but we’re very excited!
